Dental check requirement solves major cost issue for RSE scheme workers

ScoffFresh

Problem Solved for: Lack of knowledge about pre-arrival dental issues resolved through PICMI process of making conditions explicit

About the Business

Scottfresh, a fresh vegetable grower located in a remote area of New Zealand, employs workers under the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme. These workers travel from the Pacific Islands to assist with critical seasonal operations. Ensuring the well-being and financial stability of both workers and the business is a key priority for Scottfresh.

Pain Point

Workers often arrived in New Zealand with significant pre-existing dental issues, leading to costly dental treatments. These expenses were not covered by insurance, as policies only applied to new conditions. This resulted in financial strain for both the workers, who faced unexpected medical bills, and Scottfresh, which was often forced to assist with these expenses.

Solution

Scottfresh integrated a recommendation for RSE applicants to undergo a dental check before departing for New Zealand. The need for this check was clearly outlined during the application process, with explanations provided about the high costs of dental treatments in New Zealand and the limitations of insurance coverage. This proactive approach ensured workers addressed dental issues in advance.

Implementation

As part of reviewing application workflows in PICMI, businesses are encouraged to brainstorm problems for previous seasons and see if they can be addressed. The requirement for a dental check was seamlessly added to Scottfresh’s PICMI application workflow. Applicants were informed of the necessity, cost implications, and insurance restrictions early in the hiring process. This transparency allowed workers to prepare appropriately, addressing dental issues affordably in their home country before travelling to New Zealand.

By addressing dental checks upfront, we avoided costly issues later and set our workers up for success from day one.

Results

The dental check requirement was more successful than anticipated, completely eliminating the problem of unexpected dental costs for new arrivals. Workers responded positively, and both Scottfresh and the employees saved thousands of dollars in potential expenses. The workers experienced a smoother transition, free from financial surprises, while the business gained confidence in its preparedness.
